HCA National Photography Competition and Exhibition *** MOVED TO JANUARY 2023 *** Online Submission Form The Hackettstown Center for the Arts strives to honor our mission statement by presenting to the community up and coming as well as seasoned talent in the field of photography through this annual, national competition and exhibition. Photographs submitted are judged and recognized through prizes awarded to top talent in various categories. 2022 Competition Theme Music! Anything and everything to do with Music! How Do I Enter? Begin entering on May 1, 2022 Deadline is July 5, 2022, 11:59 pm local Online Submission Form Entry Fee A $20 fee is required. You may enter up to five (5) photos. If you wish to submit more than five images, each additional entry is $10 Categories Photos must be unaltered. However, there is an altered category. See FAQ section for details. What Do I Need To Enter? Your images need to be JPEG formatted and in RGB color mode. While there are no size restrictions, it is recommended to make either the width or the height about 1600 pixels and maintain the aspect ratio. Awards Place | Value 1ST | $400 2ND | $300 3RD | $100 Altered Image Award Honorable Mentions Eligibility HCA National Photography Competition and Exhibition is open to any amateur or professional photographer 18 years of age or older in the United States or its territories. Submitted images must be the photographer’s own work, and it is the sole responsibility of the photographer to obtain written releases from any recognizable person(s) depicted. Two-dimensional work derived from any photographic process — traditional, digital, or photo-based mixed media — is eligible as long as the work is original and has never been exhibited at the Hackettstown Center for the Arts. Three–dimensional work is not eligible for this competition and exhibition. FAQs Do I need to have my photos printed before I enter the contest? No. After you digitally submit your photo(s) to the contest via our Online Submission Form, the jurors will decide if your photos will be part of the Exhibition. Not every photo that is entered makes it to the exhibition. When will the winners be announced? Winners will be announced by July 8th and posted to the web site/social media the following week. Who selects the winners? The Artistic Director, under the guidance of the Board of Directors of the Hackettstown Center for the Arts, selects professional photographers as judges. Judges names and biographies are included during the announcement of each year’s winners. Can I submit a photo on someone else’s behalf? No. You may only submit a photograph if you are the sole creator and copyright owner. Enhanced versus Altered Enhanced Photos = Minor adjustments, including the removal of sensor dust or scratches on scans of negatives, dodging and burning, sharpening, contrast, toning, slight color adjustment and conversion to grayscale are acceptable for any categories. Altered Photos = The addition and subtraction of objects and/or people, image composites including HDR and stitched panoramas, major color adjustments, applying digital and/or traditional special effects. Do you accept non-digital photographs? Yes. We accept high-quality scanned images of non-digital photographs. We do not accept hard copies of photographs. Do you accept black-and-white photographs? Yes. Color photographs converted to grayscale are acceptable in any category as well. Can photographs be cropped? Cropped photographs are eligible in all categories. If my work is accepted, are there specifications for presentation? Yes. Mounting. Photographs must be mounted on rigid backing (ex: foamboard). Borders and dimensions are at the creative discretion of the photographer, but size should not exceed 16 x 20. Photos will be displayed at the discretion of the Artistic Director (hanging, easel, wall, etc.) Can I choose to have my photographs for sale to the public at the Exhibition? Yes. Winners and Honorable Mentions will be informed of specifics. Where can I send questions and feedback? The Legal Stuff You retain your rights to your photograph. Note that by entering the contest, you grant Hackettstown Center for the Arts (“Center”) and those authorized by the Center, a royalty-free, world-wide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to publicly display, distribute, reproduce and create derivative works of the entries, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or later developed, for any purpose, including, but not limited to, advertising and promotion of the Center, the Competition, its website, exhibition, and commercial products, including but not limited to Center publications. Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit as feasible. The Center will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses. Disclaimer We reserve the right to change or modify any of the terms and conditions contained herein or any policy or guidelines, at any time and in our sole discretion. Any changes or modification will be effective immediately and you waive any right you may have to receive specific notice of such changes or modifications.
